Climate Investments in VA: Improving Passenger Rail
What is Being Done to Expand Rail Service in Virginia?
Virginia Conservation Network (VCN) is partnering with different organizations to create video stories showcasing impactful projects throughout the Commonwealth and highlight opportunities for decision-makers. Partnership for Smarter Growth (PSG) is committed to advocating for building communities that are both easy to live in and good for the environment. PSG is highlighting the Long Bridge and S-Line projects, which aim to increase and expand rail service in Virginia and along the East Coast.
In December 2023, the Long Bridge and S-Line projects together received nearly $2 billion in grant funding. These grants will fund rail segments to separate passenger and freight rail traffic for Long Bridge and improve connectivity between Virginia and North Carolina for the S-Line.
How Will Expanding Our Rail System Benefit All Virginians?
Virginians rely on rail for employment, transporting goods, and accessing essential services like healthcare and education. In recent years, Virginia’s efforts to improve and expand rail service led to a 135% increase in ridership, expanding daily Amtrak Regional service to an additional 2.5 million Virginians. More people riding trains means fewer vehicles on our roads and highways, generating less pollution, easing congestion, and saving lives. Our rail system also provides a cleaner mode of transportation. Regional rail service has reduced fuel consumption by 7 million gallons, preventing 61,000 metric tons of carbon pollution and protecting the air we breathe.
We must increase funding and support to maintain our rail system and give riders the frequent, reliable access they deserve. With over 1.1 million Virginians over the age of 16 without a driver’s license, providing other forms of transportation is essential for people who need it most. Investing in rail ensures we are advancing toward a cleaner, more equitable transportation system for all Virginians.
