Climate Investments in VA: Reconnecting Jackson Ward

What is the Reconnect Jackson Ward Project?

Virginia Conservation Network (VCN) is partnering with different organizations to create video stories showcasing impactful projects throughout the Commonwealth and highlight opportunities for decision-makers. Partnership for Smarter Growth (PSG) is committed to advocating for building communities that are both easy to live in and good for the environment. PSG is highlighting the Reconnect Jackson Ward project, which aims to reconnect the Jackson Ward neighborhood.

In February 2023, the City of Richmond was awarded a $1.35 million grant to propose a plan to reconnect Jackson Ward, a historic African American neighborhood that was split by the construction of Interstates 95 and 64. This grant will allow the city to engineer a highway cap over a section of I-95, allowing for increased connectivity between North and South Jackson Ward and creating more green spaces and community areas.

What Benefits Will Reconnecting Jackson Ward Bring to Residents?

Every community deserves a neighborhood that is accessible, easy to live in, and good for the environment. The existing infrastructure relies on cars as the primary mode of transportation to travel across the city. This project will create and strengthen bike and pedestrian infrastructure in Jackson Ward, improving connectivity within the area and to the rest of the city. This project will also improve public health by providing cleaner modes of transportation and more parks and open spaces, which will reduce harmful emissions that contribute to climate pollution. Parks and open spaces will give residents safe access to nature, with more opportunities for recreation and socializing, enhancing their mental and physical well-being.

This project can also bring economic opportunities to all of Jackson Ward by strengthening street connections, allowing more residents to live near where they work. Overall, city leaders can prove their commitment to reconnecting Jackson Ward by seeking ongoing feedback from community members and reaffirming their support for this project.
