How Can Our Commonwealth Seize This Historic Opportunity?

We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to create an expansive new state park. The proposed Oak Hill State Park in Loudoun County covers 1,240 acres of fields, forests, and rivers.

Adding another state park is good for Virginia’s communities and economy. For instance:

  • Oak Hill will expand outdoor recreation in Northern Virginia. Oak Hill will add miles of trails and outdoor recreation opportunities for Loudoun County, one of Virginia’s fastest-growing regions.
  • Oak Hill will preserve an important historic site. Oak Hill includes the former home of President James Monroe. Preserving this historic site will ensure that we can pass it on to generations that follow us.
  • Oak Hill will be open to the public with minimal costs. The property’s well-preserved historic structures and landscape require minimal work before welcoming visitors. Various sources have already committed $46.35 million, covering most park costs.
  • Oak Hill will create conservation and agricultural opportunities. Establishing Oak Hill will provide opportunities to protect wildlife habitats, improve water quality, and support working farms.

Creating a new state park at Oak Hill will increase access to green spaces for all Virginians and preserve a historic site, ensuring future generations can enjoy and learn from it. You can take a deeper dive into investing in public parks in Our Common Agenda’s “Building a Strong Outdoor Economy” policy paper.
