Our Work

VCN promotes environmental stewardship at the state capitol. Each year, VCN staff evaluate thousands of bills and develop policy recommendations for a cleaner, healthier Virginia. Here are some of our top priorities.

Citizen Involvement

Helping Virginians understand and influence the decisions that affect their health and quality of life is part of VCN's mission. Increasing citizen involvement and transparency in government helps ensure that our shared resources are protected.

Climate Change

Climate change has broad implications for Virginia, threatening not just our coastal communities but also our fisheries, farms, wildlife and public health. Decisive action today will help protect Virginia from the worst of global warming.

Energy

VCN works to move Virginia toward an ambitious, clean and safe energy program. A responsible program begins with energy efficiency and conservation programs that benefit working Virginians and should protect Virginia's air for the health of its citizens.

Forests

Virginia's forests provide a vital resource: protecting our air, bolstering Virginia's economy, serving as a special place for recreation, and absorbing carbon from the air.

Land Conservation

Virginia's lands need protection and preservation now more than ever. Successful land conservation requires action and initiative at all levels that is geared toward the protection of a diversity of lands.

Transportation

VCN works to link land use planning with transportation, acknowledging changing development forces such as urban revitalization, affordable housing, and the increasingly prohibitive expense of sprawl.

Water

All Virginian's benefit from the protection of our streams, rivers and wetlands. Clean water is vital for a healthy environment and thriving communities.

Wildlife

Virginia needs to protect the ability of wildlife enthusiasts, hunter, and fisherman alike to have access to the state's bounty.
