Making Contact: Tips on Talking to Elected Officials

Communicate with your official by scheduling a meeting, making a phone call or sending a letter. Your opinion matters.

Individual Meeting with a Law Maker

Making direct contact with lawmakers is the most valuable action you can take as a citizen advocate. Letting your leaders know that environmental issues and conservation are important to the people is the best way to initiate positive change.

Public Meetings

Agencies hold public meetings as part of their process to make regulations. Elected officials may hold public meetings to provide an open forum for citizens to voice concerns.

Letters and Phone Calls

Lawmakers often use letters they receive as indicators of what issues are important to their constituents. The number of letters received on a certain issue may sway a legislator’s view point on an issue and alter his or her vote.

Influencing the Media

A great way to bring an issue to the public’s attention. Media attention can put pressure on politicians to act, and act quickly.
